The dash is standard-issue Contour, with fussy controls on the capable audio system. Inside, the nicely bolstered, leather-trimmed seats suited my 6'5" frame well, but, like in a BMW 3 Series, the cabin feels a bit snug. This car behaves like it's ready to take on anything. The four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are effective, although the pedal does not feel as firm as one on a BMW 3 Series.Ĭorriveau points out that all four discs are vented and that the fronts, borrowed from Ford's European range-topping Scorpio, are larger than last year.Īll this hardware comes together in a slick but muscular-feeling character. Yes, little imperfections get through the driver's seat and steering wheel, but given this machine's flat, tenacious cornering, even in bumpy turns that would upset many a pricier apple cart, this is a small price to pay. That number should improve on the highway, and as the kilometres accumulate.įront and rear stabilizer bars are revised, shock absorbers are retuned and the 16-inch, five-spoke, alloy wheels are shod with new 215/50ZR-16 BFGoodrich GForce T/A tires. That's driven "enthusiastically" in urban conditions. My tester, which broke the 2,000 km mark in my care, was frugal with its regular unleaded, using 12.8 L per 100 km. The hydraulically operated clutch has an easy, smooth take-up.

Pierre Corriveau, Ford of Canada brand manager for this model, provided a long list of mods that have put the spurs to the SVT, including cleaner in-take runners and ports, dual 2.5" exhaust pipes, a higher compression ratio, a conical air filter, hollow camshafts and a lighter flywheel. It now produces 200 hp at 6600 rpm and 169 lbft of torque at 5500 rpm. The 2.5 L Duratec twin cam 24-valver has more punch this year. V6s aren't known for their aural appeal, but this engine manages a satisfying, expensive-sounding growl. Edmunds' expert review of the Used 1999 Ford Contour SVT provides the latest look at trim-level features and specs, performance, safety, and comfort. The test-track data also looked promising, but, in a real-world test on Toronto's battle-scarred streets last winter, the Contour just didn't feel like the well-rounded and polished machine that could put a smile on an import-driver's face.Īfter some tweaking, the Special Vehicle Team has unleashed an improved version for 1999. But with a list price of under $30,000, the SVT was also more than $10,000 cheaper than a six-cylinder, rear-drive Bavarian.

Introduced in 1998, the Contour SVT was billed as Detroit's answer to the much-prized BMW 3 Series sedans. Sorry for posting a link from another forum site however, I feel that there are several people out there with this same problem who are as desperate as I am in getting it repaired. The cynic in me hates gushing about a new car, but Ford's 1999 Contour SVT is such a pleasing machine at such an attractive price that I can't help it.īut the car I would like to call the best sport sedan buy of the decade, did not start its life as a paragon of competence. Here is the link to his post within the forums. His price is reasonable considering all the work that is involved. The Contour SVT is a car from Ford, with front wheel drive, a front positioned engine and a 4 door saloon (sedan) body style. He is basically converting a harness from a Cougar to work in the Contour. I found a guy on CEG forums who repairs them. You may be able to convince Dom to repair it. In the end, it's only a permanent band-aid that should out last the car. It's tedious work removing all of the split loom and tape and then attempt to re-insulate each individual wire that's missing insulation. If you can still find them through a dealer locator, new harnesses are rather expensive. It's generally recommended to find another harness in better condition, but that can be very frustrating as well. I am unaware of any one who will repair the harness.
